Herbs for Summer Skin Issues

Itchy skin or rash from topical exposure to an allergen – Nettles Leaf extract (use on skin topically and also you can ingest the nettle leaf extract) It's  like Natural Benedryl (anti-histamine). Also witch hazel or rose water used topically can help.

Bug Bites that Itch – Avoid mosquitos with natural insect repellents (like Herban Avenues Bugs at Bay available at IFMC office). These contain citronella rich herbs that mosquitos can't tolerate! If you do get bitten, use topical anti-itch herbs like plantain, chickweed, soothing herbs like comfrey leaf, peppermint, lavender and calendula.

Sunburn or red skin irritation – Calendula oil or extract used topically will reduce redness and inflammation and will soothe the burn. St. John's Wort oil or extract (used topically) will also assist with this. Blend these two with lavender essence & aloe (topical analgesic) for a potent remedy.

Poison Vine Rash (ivy, oak, sumac) – Treat with jewelweed the minute you know you have been exposed. Jewelweed contains a phytochemical that can actually beat the urushiol of the poison ivy to the skin cell receptor site and block it from entering! If you are too late and an itchy rash ensues, try dead sea mud with a little peppermint essence to dry it out. Herban Avenues Jewelweed Soaps & Lotions are available at IFMC.

Eczema or Psoriasis – Flaxseed oil taken internally as a supplement lends Omegas and other nutrients that lubricate the skin from the inside out but also decrease inflammation and buffer the nerve endings that are experiencing the “itch” sensation. Switching to 100% plant-based skincare is a good idea to avoid topical triggers. Botanical creams containing herbs like comfrey, aloe, calendula, rosewater and lavender promote serious healing.

Fungal Infection – from wet bathing suits and sweaty sportswear. Chamomile is amazing as an anti-fungal! Use the essence or extract topically or mixed in your bath water. Also, plain yogurt can be applied topically. Mix yogurt with chamomile or tea tree essence, calendula extract and lavender for a potent remedy.
