Keep it Simple: Yoga, Meditation and Reiki
By: Ann Teresa Thomas, MA
A few simple lifestyle changes can also enhance our well being and provide an “inner vacation” whenever we need. Yoga, meditation and reiki are practices based on the most fundamental life functions: breathing, stretching, and maintaining an optimal flow of energy or life force. They invite us to breath, stretch and be. They integrate body, mind and spirit, and foster an awareness of who we are at the core of our being.
Yoga is an amalgam of ancient psycho-physical-spiritual practices that include gentle and rigorous physical stretches, controlled breathing patterns, and techniques for quieting the senses. It also induces a sense of inner peace and calm.
Meditation is a universal practice that enables one to quiet the mind by observing it in a non-analytical way. It is simple, still and silent. Feelings of peace and unity with ourselves and the world around us are often experienced. One can also reflect on one's spiritual beliefs thereby connecting us to the higher Source pervading the universe.
Finally, reiki is a non-invasive laying-on-of-hands that restores energy imbalances in our system and attunes us with “ki” or “universal life force.” This energetic attunement is similar to tuning a musical instrument so the “music” of our lives is more clear and harmonious.
On a physiological level, each of these modalities has a profound effect on reversing the negative effects of stress and its related symptoms. They have been effective in reducing high blood pressure, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and other chronic problems such as fibromyalgia and adrenal fatigue.
They are also easily integrated into any allopathic medical treatment plan, and complement all the services of the IFMC including acupuncture, massage, pilates, personal training, and our holistic and First Line Therapy nutritional counseling services. They are non-invasive, cause no harsh side effects, and empower you with behavioral tools for enhancing your health. Their benefits are myriad and as close as your own breath.
